ST.ANDREW'S PALACE
ABOUT US
St Andrew's Palace
The current premises of the Soċjeta` Filarmonika L-Unjoni is St Andrew`s Palace which is situated at St Andrew`s Street Luqa. These premises were acquired by our Society back on 6th May 1990. However, it has been using it as from 1914. Back then the building consisted of two houses built in 1781 and 1846. These houses were destructed during an air attack on Luqa on 9th April1942. Eventually, with the help of the War Damage Fund and the perseverance of our volunteers, the current premises were erected.
The committee had commissioned Architect Salvu Sammut for preparing the necessary plans. Building started in 1946 and the official inauguration was done in June 1948. Over the years, the building was refurbished to cater for the needs at the time. Most of the works were conducted in 1976, in 1996 when a new floor was added, and also in recent years.
The building consists of a bar area, hall and office at the ground floor, a committee room and two halls at the first floor, named after our founder Mro Vincenzo Camilleri and Mro. Joseph Abela Scolaro, and a rehearsal hall named after Prof Charles E. Zammit at the top floor. The top floor also includes a studio used by our Media Team. Most of the investment done recently, especially in what regards to the restoration of the façade, the upgrading of the rehearsal hall and the refurbishment of the halls were only possible with the assistance of EU funding acquired following calls issued by the GAL Xlokk Foundation.
Nowadays, the Soċjeta` Filarmonika L-Unjoni has modern premises that can be used for the recreation of its members, rehearsals and also small scale events.
